On Wednesday March 21, 2018, Kidde recalled nearly 500K smoke alarms.  Models PI2010 and PI9010, were manufactured with a protective yellow cap that covers one of the sensors.  This yellow cap makes the device ineffective in detecting and alerting a fire.

Needless to say, this can result in a very dangerous situation for you and your family if you are relying on this smoke detector to keep  you safe in your home.

Recall Details

The affected models, PI2010 and PI9010, were sold at many major retailers in the United States and Canada including Home Depot, Amazon.com, and Walmart to over 450K customers.

Actions/Next Steps

Kidde has advised that if you purchased one of these units, you should remove the device from their wall to inspect it.  Examine the alarm through an opening on the side. If you see a yellow cap, then this is one of the recalled models and it should be replaced.  Please make sure that you have a replacement alarm ready to install prior to removing the Kidde model. At no time should your home be without working smoke detectors.

If you find that you have one of the defective smoke detectors, you can contact Kidde to receive instructions and request a free replacement smoke alarm.
